During the spring season, LOVE is in the air…even science says so!
We associate springtime with sweetness, pleasant weather, and new beginnings. Trees sprout beautiful, picturesque flowers, animals emerge from hibernation, and people fall in love.
According to neuroscientist Helen Fischer, higher dopamine levels associated with springtime are linked with more people falling in love. In general, humans are likely to be happier in the spring. Therefore, we are also more receptive to romance. In fact, when it’s sunny out, women are actually more likely to give men their phone numbers.
“There’s so much novelty in the spring,” says Fischer. “There is so much more color, new smells, people take their clothes off and you can see more of them. And so there are many new stimuli that trigger the brain, drive up dopamine, and make you more susceptible to love.”
Author Sanden Totten of MPR News explains, “Every April, your brain unwittingly becomes a dopamine factory, turning you into a love junkie.”
Similarly, in the winter, our brains produce more melatonin, making us sleepier and sluggish. In the spring, however, the amount of light we are exposed to slows melatonin production, which makes us more energetic and optimistic. This melatonin decline can even affect hormone levels, affecting confidence and libido.
